The book is structured in three chapters. The first one is dedicated to the biography and political activity of the Athenian Euboulos, on the basis of literary and epigraphic sources: the chapters reconsiders the aspects of the vulgata that do not seem to rest on a solid documentary basis and values some elements of the tradition so far not adequately considered; it is completed by an appendix that includes the main testimonia discussed in the essay. The second chapter focuses on the Xenophon’s Poroi, written in the aftermath of the Social war, and examines the economic measures proposed by this treatise, which aims to ensure to Athens an ethically correct way of support. Finally, the third chapter attempts to include both the political activity of Euboulos and the theorization of Xenophon in the overall panorama of contemporary publicistic, to highlight the theoretical and practical aspects of the socio-economic perspectives of the Fourth century Athen. Finally the concluding considerations underline the relationship between the aimed economic rebirth of the city and the issue of hegemony.
Il volume si articola in tre capitoli. Il primo è dedicato alla ricostruzione della biografia e dell’attività politica dell’ateniese Eubulo sulla base delle fonti letterarie ed epigrafiche, rivedendo gli aspetti della vulgata sul personaggio che non sembrano poggiare su una solida base documentaria e valorizzando alcuni elementi della tradizione finora non adeguatamente considerati; lo completa, inoltre, un’appendice che comprende le principali testimonianze in esso discusse. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sui Poroi di Senofonte, redatti all’indomani della guerra sociale, e prende in esame le misure economiche che l’opera propone, finalizzate a garantire ad Atene una modalità eticamente giusta di sostentamento. Il terzo capitolo, infine, tenta di inserire sia l’attività pratica di Eubulo sia la teorizzazione di Senofonte nel panorama complessivo della pubblicistica contemporanea, per mettere in rilievo aspetti teorici e pratici delle prospettive socio-economiche dell’Atene del IV secolo. Chiudono il volume le considerazioni conclusive, che sottolineano il rapporto fra l’auspicata rinascita economica della città e il tema dell’egemonia.
